Thanks so much for posting! Like someone else mentioned this song, along with "The Thing" is part of the soundtrack of my childhood. My mother had the 78, and we played it all the time!

My mother who is 91 gave me this record as a girl. I still own it. It was my favorite record growing up and I played it so much I almost wore the grooves smooth. Anyway she said she bought the 45 for this song and it was the A side.

@casinobowling Thanks fo commenting, actually this is the "A" side as is labeled on the record as 3968-A and the Things was labeled as 3968-B on both the 78 and 45 RPM releases.

When I was a kid my dad had this 45 with "The Thing" on the flip side, and I constantly listened to it on his portable mono player with the broom-stick spindle. The melody of this song is part of the soundtrack of my childhood. "Goofus has been lucky for me".

For some reason, this morning in the shower, this song came back to me after sixty years. I could still remember the first and last verse of the song but not the middle verse. It was fun to hear the song again on youtube. Phil Harris is remembered for having signed a long term with NBC and collecting 100K a year for many years after closing his radio show, a lot of money in the fifties and sixties.

@EasyAce Probably, Les Paul's version of Goofus is nice too. This is almost as good as The Thing.

Who'd-a thunk Les Paul was a fan of The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. (I'm betting Harris did this one at least once on that show, I couldn't confirm it because it's not on the surviving show episodes, alas . . . I should know, I have all of them . . . )
