"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who was later to become his wife. At the time the couple were lovers, although MacColl was married to someone else.

MacColl wrote the song for Seeger, also a folk singer, after she asked him to pen a song for a play she was in. MacColl wrote the song and taught it to Seeger over the phone. The alternative version of the creation of this song is that MacColl was challenged by a friend to write a love song, with no politics. This song was the result.

Another group that I find at least as good as they are is the Kingston Trio. (My opinion, I know ) I love their voices, banjos and guitars and their humor. You may only have heard of Tom Dooley, Tijuana Jail, or M.T.A. but they had so many more and many of them were ROTFLMAO funny. Take a chance and do a youtube search. What have you got to lose but a little time. Look for Zombie Jamboree and Greenback Dollar. They are two of my favorites. I get nothing out of this be the joy of sharing a great group. Look for the originals first as over the years they lost and added people.

Peter, Paul and Mary.. I had a girlfiend I was in love with, she went to America and when I met her in Leiden again, she was married to Peter, who was with her! My heart broke! Nevertheless they sang very harmonious songs!

@Romano Gitano if you listen to Peggy Seeger—that's Ewan's (future) wife, for whom he wrote the song—singing the original version in her beautiful sweet voice, you'll actually find PPM's version a bit on the slow side!I'd never heard this version before. It's the only cover I've heard that captures the folk essence of the song.

Was so lucky to grow up with this music. Mary Travers had not only the most beautiful voice in American folk music, but also the most beautiful face. Check out Johnny Cash's version of this song. It's also very good ~
