Heard an interesting interview with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. The story of Pretty Woman was originally named $3,000 (the cost of drug money) and was set as a drama reflecting the outcome of drug addiction. It was scripted with a very sad and dark ending. Julia Roberts had been cast when negotiations with the studios and director fell through. The script was sold to the Disney company who brought in Gary Marshall as director. He envisioned a completely different plot and outcome using the same characters. Richard Gere was approached several times refusing the role until Marshall set up a secret meeting between Gere and Roberts. He just had a hunch. Within an hour the chemistry between the two actors was palpable and Gere gave the green light to star in Pretty Woman. The rest they say is history.
