I don't know if this is the original version but i think this is the best version that i heard so far in spite of my respect for the version by the Righteous Brothers and i cannot understand why this beautiful version was never released the year when the song was conceived and never after that. Perry Como sang that song in 1955, the same year as Al Hibbler did a version of his own and have a big hit with it.

Absolutely. If you want to hear an amazing version, search this song sung by John Gary. Your jaw will drop. It's way out of everyone's league......

Perry Como was great and brought a lot sensitivity an subtlety to his singing. But for this song I think the best was Roy Hamilton, who influenced the Righteous Brothers and Elvis, among others. There's a really good quality recently posted version of Roy's on YouTube--the Epic record with the yellow label. You can really hear the quality of his voice on that.

Al Hibbler ( 1955 ) was the original Artist that did Unchained Melody other than the movie music - so please hear his version before selecting your favorite. Thanks

This is wonderful! I had never heard this version before. It is now my 2nd favorite version behind only Bing Crosby's version that was released the same year. It's real close though. I might have to reverse the order after a few more "spins" of this version. Thanks again!

I agree with you. I also find it neat that you have the need to be accurate and correct yourself when you make even a small mistake. That strengthens my view that there is still hope for humanity. My dictionary has been getting a good workout over the past few months. foxfox82

There are so many excellent versions of this great song, but in my estimation, this one reins supreme.

I now consider this the BEST, albeit forgotten, version of this very popular singer's song. Perry was a fantastic baritone...a GREAT balladeer like Frank, Nat and Matt Monro. His skill might have been underestimated because he made it seem so effortless. Some said Perry was a Bing imitator-- neither Perry nor Frank were Bing imitators-- they could both sing rings around crooner Bing. Perry also did some bad songs that were part of the time and beneath him-- Hot Diggety, etc.

This is not the original, though the song was written in 1955. The original version is by Todd Duncan, who recorded the Original Soundtrack of the movie "Unchained" in 1955. Sincerely, I cannot say this is "the best" performance. Surely, it's one of the best, along with the Righteous Brothers', and much better of the Platters'.

Absolutely agree. With his breath control and wide vocal range Gary brings out all of the pathos and makes the most of the lengthy, sustained melody. He was perfect for Unchained Melody.

Maybe THE best version...what a GREAT baritone Perry was! The great popular singer/balladeers: 1) Frank, 2) Nat 3) Matt Monro/Perry Como...all were naturals who also worked hard to do songs right.

Love this version, but try John Gary's version. It is unbelievable! Both are great singers sadly missed.
