in all honesty, i'm not finding myself reacting much to this record one way or another. it's heavy on atmosphere in this kind of fake pomposity, but the tracks tend to end before they're able to develop themselves into anything that is capable of producing much of a reaction. "leave them wanting more". well, ok. but a kind of basic groundwork remains necessary as a hook, and it's just not pulling me.if i'm having any kind of reaction it's kind of like "shit or get off the pot". there's such a spectrum, and we're both obviously in it. but i've never wanted to connect with something that's going to be isolating. there's reasons somebody like freddie mercury put the content of his art ahead of his sexuality. and, while i don't want to come down on somebody that wants to mix the things up, it ultimately strikes me as a little bit trite. but, i mean that's not to condemn it or try and negate anybody else's connection to it.i think there's some good ideas, and he's demonstrated he's worth paying attention to. but, i think this belongs in a "has potential" list rather than a best-of list. and, the conclusion i'm coming to is that it must have been a slow year for pop music.
