"Till There Was You" is a song written by Meredith Willson for his 1957 musical play The Music Man, and which also appeared in the 1962 movie version. The song is sung by librarian Marian Paroo (Barbara Cook on Broadway, Shirley Jones in the film) to Professor Harold Hill (portrayed by Robert Preston) toward the end of Act Two.

The first recording of this song to be released came even before the original cast album version of January 1958. Promotional copies of the 45 rpm single, Capitol P3847, were released on November 26, 1957, even before the Broadway production had premiered on December 19. Produced by Nelson Riddle, it featured his orchestra and 17-year-old vocalist Sue Raney.

"Till There Was You" was a minor hit in the UK for Peggy Lee in March 1961. Paul McCartney was introduced to her music by his older cousin, Bett Robbins, who would occasionally baby-sit the two McCartney brothers. McCartney said: "I had no idea until much later that it was from The Music Man." "Till There Was You" was part of the Beatles' repertoire in 1962 and performed at the Star Club in Hamburg.

Great song. This is from her album "Latin A La Lee" from 1960. She covered several songs from Broadway songs using a latin beat.

Thanks for your visit. By the way, could I be further informed on how 'elevator music' sounds like? Thanks....

I love Peggy's voice, (in this and just about any song), but sorry, the orchestra sounds like elevator music with that flimsy pseudo-Latin beat. I was looking for the Sue Raney version of this song released just before the Broadway opening of "Music Man" which the song was originally written for.

@CeeCeeable Well, I got a compilation CD of Peggy's over a year ago, not knowing what to expect. Of course I knew and loved the song 'Fever'. But I realised that this was real classy music, and this song was the standout track for me, even though I was so familiar with hearing Paul McCarntney singing it! So, I must say Thank You..!!

@CeeCeeable There are pictures in Peter Richmond's biography "Miss Peggy Lee" and several available out on the various auction sites (e-Bay,etc.) These are from the early '50's, when they first started seeing each other. She referred to him as "Roger" in her autobiography, which was written & published after Preston died but his wife was still alive. Check the Lee biography. He was a first-class womanizer.

@mmbr01rrf Thanks for the added info. I didn't know anything about that 10 year Peggy Lee had with Robert Preston..Would be pleased if I'd be able to see those pics of them.

@CeeCeeable Not sure if your were aware of this but another pertinent fact is that Miss Peggy Lee and Robert Preston (The Music Man) had an on & off again affair for about 10 years. From about '53 to '63 and then nothing for many years. They were planning to meet again just before he became ill but he called it off. It wasn't broadcast news but there are pics of them together & mentions in biographies.
