The story that I have heard about this hymn is that Ms. Crosby had a deram in which Jesus was in her church touching the members he planned to take to heaven and she prayed that he would not "pass her by." The next day she wrote this hymn and described members of her congregation that she had seen in her dream in great detail, even though she had been blind from infancy. She stated that it was the only dream she ever had in which she could see.
