This extraordinary Eucharistic hymn, by the great St. Thomas Aquinas, is a fan favourite among the faithful. This version regretably leaves out the second verse. The recording is from the CD illuminations, compiled by Dan Gibson. the Latin text and English translation follow:

Pange, lingua, gloriosi

Corporis mysterium,

Sanguinisque pretiosi,

quem in mundi pretium

fructus ventris generosi

Rex effudit Gentium.

Nobis datus, nobis natus

ex intacta Virgine,

et in mundo conversatus,

sparso verbi semine,

sui moras incolatus

miro clausit ordine.

In supremae nocte coenae

recumbens cum fratribus

observata lege plene

cibis in legalibus,

cibum turbae duodenae

se dat suis manibus.

Verbum caro, panem verum

verbo carnem efficit:

fitque sanguis Christi merum,

et si sensus deficit,

ad firmandum cor sincerum

sola fides sufficit.

Tantum ergo Sacramentum

veneremur cernui:

et antiquum documentum

novo cedat ritui:

praestet fides supplementum

sensuum defectui.

Genitori, Genitoque

laus et jubilatio,

salus, honor, virtus quoque

sit et benedictio:

Procedenti ab utroque

compar sit laudatio.

Amen.

Sing, my tongue, the Savior's glory,

of His flesh the mystery sing;

of the Blood, all price exceeding,

shed by our immortal King,

destined, for the world's redemption,

from a noble womb to spring.

Of a pure and spotless Virgin

born for us on earth below,

He, as Man, with man conversing,

stayed, the seeds of truth to sow;

then He closed in solemn order

wondrously His life of woe.

On the night of that Last Supper,

seated with His chosen band,

He the Pascal victim eating,

first fulfills the Law's command;

then as Food to His Apostles

gives Himself with His own hand.

Word-made-Flesh, the bread of nature

by His word to Flesh He turns;

wine into His Blood He changes;

what though sense no change discerns?

Only be the heart in earnest,

faith her lesson quickly learns.

Down in adoration falling,

This great Sacrament we hail,

Over ancient forms of worship

Newer rites of grace prevail;

Faith will tell us Christ is present,

When our human senses fail.

To the everlasting Father,

And the Son who made us free

And the Spirit, God proceeding

From them Each eternally,

Be salvation, honor, blessing,

Might and endless majesty.

Amen.

I am so moved by my Lord's love for me...How many times has he recuperated me? How many times has he shown me mercy and love and understanding. I am dumbfounded by his capacity to forgive and draw me back to him everytime. Thank you for your patience Jesus and most importantly thank you for your sacrifice, because without it, I could have never known you or met you the way I do.

What an incredibly solemn recording, I did not know that there was such a music tradition that could record things like this. Truly magnificent.

I have heard this song every Maundy Thursday, of course without nothing accompanying it but the chant itself. However this version could work well to bring peace in myself in the so called "working days". Superb!thank you Petrus Josephus for sharing this

This is a beautiful version of a popular Catholic hymn, although not quite fit for liturgical use. This reminds me of the vast treasure we Catholics have of liturgical music.

Wow ! This is just beautiful ! Thank you for sharing, this is so calming and perfect to enjoy on a nice Sabbath Day such as today which fits so well since the 7th Day is a day of rest anyway. I love how the female voice sounds like Enya. :)

Thank you for posting this. I just got home from Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper and we sang this during the Blessed Sacrament Procession. I only know this in Latin and found myself singing those beautiful age old lyrics. As a young girl in Catholic school, the Tantum Ergo was indelibly time-stamped in my memory and now as an older adult, I am glad I have those memories. Thank you St. Thomas Aquinas for a beautiful piece of music.

Listen to the hymn before mass or in the car on the way home, or even just doing work. It will bring you peace this Holy Thursday.
