Hailing from Paterson, New Jersey, Jimmy Charles was very popular singing hat churches and community functions as a young teen. The driving force in his early singing career was his uncle, who first took him to the Apollo Theater and then to see Phil Medley. After hearing Charles sing, Medley took Charles to Bill Lashley of Promo Records who signed Charles to a recording contract. Charles' biggest hit was "A Million To One" which swept the U.S. and the pop charts. Charles would record a few more songs but was not able to duplicate his 1960 smash hit and his singing career end as fast as it started.
