i don't think that's what happened at all, there are many versions online, like she was part of a cult or that it had something to do with K. splitting up with someone in Montreal... as far as i read when i first discovered the band, i was curious also so i had a look. Do you know the story of this band? My brother's friend Milan really likes this band and told me that the keyboardist was assimilated and made to be this pimp from montreal's hooker and couldn't name her so he just put a tatoo "of Montreal" on her leg to signify she was part of that city. and because it was such a horrible event in her life, the singer decided to name the band after all that and make positive out of negative. :) Crazy eh?

the sad part it like all of their songs the lyrics are like super super sad and serious but the music is upbeat and catchy and its a contradiction. i think its funny how they named their band after a failed romance with a woman in Montreal. or so they said in one interview.
