You know, I used to have kind of a love/hate relationship with this album, because it's texturally incredible but lyrically melodramatic... until I realized, it's basically musical theater. I mean, in a good way. There are still a few lyrics throughout the record that make me roll my eyes, but there are just as many really poetic sentiments, and conceptually it's actually pretty smart: I read it as being a conversation (or argument) between various impulses and thoughts in one person's head. And if you listen carefully, there are musical cues that let you know who's narrating at any given moment (the "downward spiral theme" at the end of "Closer" being one of the more obvious ones). All in all, I'm glad I gave it another listen. It used to be kind of a guilty pleasure for me, but now I'm seeing some more layers.
