I listened to Bassey, Sinatra, Ray Charles, Cindi Lauper, Jac Brel, Piaf .... trying to find a version I liked..... I love Nina but by the time I found this version I already hated the song ...

Completely agree. No doubt Mrs Simone is a greaa artist, but nobody can tell me that what she is doing here is just a miraculously subtle interpretation of one of the most intense chansons ever. I say, unless you can sing like a Brel or interpret him powerfully in your own way, just let him be.
