You're perfectly right Oliver. Primo Levi wasn't a philosopher at all. I've read everything by Primo Levi except Periodic Table, which I found a bit dull so I only got halfway through (sorry). My favourite is Moments of Reprieve. It isn't his most famous book but it's more beautiful and spare than the rest. If anybody wants to read an "accessible" text of his that isn't too eviscerating, I'd go for If Not Now, When.

@rm009z0858 I wouldn't say Primo Levi's writing was "heavy-duty philosophy" - it was very readable, though obviously the subject matter was serious. I read his most famous book, If this is a man, and what I took from it was that he showed how he and some other people in the Nazi camps tried to maintain some kind of dignity and humanity, despite the fact everything was designed to break people down.

Richey has great reply about people not wanting to look at themselves in the mirror. Nicky says "I'm not a woman so I can't really say... unfortunately" made me think of the lyrics "I wish I'd been born a girl instead of this wreck of a man".. he's lovely and sparkles, being a woman I can say make-up is to enhance our natural beauty.. officially.. but yeah, without it we're pretty ugly and don't like to see what's in the mirror.
