This performance of "The blind harper" by Nic Jones was recorded live in a folk club in May 1972. Nic recorded a version of this song on his vinyl album "From the devil to a stranger" (1978), but it has not been included on any of the CDs issued more recently. The song is also known as "The Lochmaben Harper".

Apologies for the background noise, and for the pops and clicks that I was not able to remove.

He let me sit at his ankles while he recorded this on to my cassette recorder in 1971. The result was it was VERY loud and his feet were stomping up and down in perfect time so the result was fantastic. I'm pleased to say I still have the recording at the George and Dragon in Sunderland.

Good God. This is wonderful. Brilliant guitar arrangement and so interesting to hear this song sung in his earlier singing style.

This version was recorded six years earlier than his LP version but I prefer this. It's more up-tempo and the guitar seems more fluent. Nic is in fine voice here and he displays that slight nasal quality he had in his early years. In his later career, that nasal tone disappeared. Nic Jones is my favorite recording artist of all time. There are no other contenders. To hear a 'new' old recording from him is something very special. Thank you Neil! Just wonderful.

Jones was such an inventive guitarist and this is a great example of his playing and arranging skills. The well-known, recorded version of this song features several other musicians, so this recording is unique in that we can hear Jones' guitar arrangement clearly. What a superb talent. Thank you for uploading this rare piece of folk history.
