Commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landing, Neil Finn and Jim Carter have re-recorded "Blue Smoke", composed by Ruru Karaitiana in 1940. Jim Carter played steel guitar on the 1948 recording with singer Pixie Williams.

A portion of funds raised will support the RSA’s 2015 Poppy Appeal which funds support services for New Zealand’s veterans, former and current servicemen and women and their dependants.

Wow this is amazing! My grandmother played this on her piano every morning..rain, hail or shine. I had no idea of the meaning behind this song, but I did know she sang it for my Grandfather and all the boys that didnt come home. Also, credit should be given to Mr Matariki Smith of Nuhaka as the original composer. #MaoriBattalion

The original writer of Blue Smoke was actually Matariki (Riki) Smith of Nuhaka. He wrote that song while in the army overseas and taught it to his regiment, which obviously became a hit. He just didn't register it on return to NZ.@Neil Finn, this song was written to express his yearning for his hometown of Nuhaka.

Ruru Karaitiana did NOT write this song. He stole it from my Papa - Captain Riki Smith of the 28th Maori Battalion.
