Neil Diamond is a great songwriter and composer, but I prefer Isaak's and Cash's cover of this track. Maybe it's the vocals... Diamond doesn't "hit" me as hard as Cash does for instance. Much more feeling and emotion in the voice.:)

His voice remains stable and strong with age. For me much of N.D. is high popular music which is better than much low serious art. He wrote unforgettable, timeless,very tonal music with only a few chords. That's hard and only possible when you are truly inspired, I believe. It can't be forced with only technique/skill. Perhaps it's today even more difficult than in the Seventies because almost any beautiful melodic hit today now sounds "recycled"? Are all the melodies already used ?

Amazing how legendary artists like Neil Diamond simply perform their songs because they are great. He comes out on stage and sings without having what seems like hundreds of dancers and laser lights. At least when you go to see him entertain you know what to expect. You know you won't think you are at the circus.

Neil's voice has not deteriorated over the years as have other singers from his era. This is extraordinary- I would imagine he sings with good vocal technique to preserve his voice instead of "belting".
