i think the drum loop is a part of this songs sound, and for those of you that aren't musicians, its actually a pain in the ass to keep perfect time with a machine for the entirety of the song. when that element is removed band members can react to each other and as an avid improviser i can tell you i've use that ability to purposefully lower or increase the tempo many many times. Props to MMJ for using the fat sound of the machine and managing to deliver an absolutely inspiring, amazingly stunning performance of this song. they're really comparable to pink floyd in how well they synchronize imo

They do that because the verse is done with a drum machine in the recording to get the distinct sound they wanted, and they want to preserve that sound even during their live events. He still plays everything else though, so I don't really see a reason to get bummed. New Order does that a lot as well.

am i the only one who noticed that the drummer isnt playing the verse? theyre using the drum track from the album...I am beyond bummed. this is my favorite my morning jacket song and the beat is extremely simple. I cant imagine why they wouldnt just have him play it.
