This has to be the most soulful version of My Funny Valentine ever, a perfectly crafted solo by John Park, former lead alto w/Stan Kenton. Note the breathtaking, emotional climax at 3:55, enough to make anyone cry! From the out-of-print "If Winter Comes" LP (apart from his work with Stan Kenton, this was the only album ever released of John's work). Listening to this will either motivate fellow sax players to really woodshed, or throw in the towel! Sadly, John passed away only months before he was to make an album with Stan Getz. Recorded 3/16/75 at Kansas City jazz fest. George Salisbury, piano. Leon Brady, drums; Milt Abel, bass. Read more about John Park here: www.kcjazzambassadors.com/issues/2004-10/johnpark.html

Wow, that lick at about 3:53 - 4:01 is so sweet (despite the squeak). I wish I could play like that :). This entire song is so sweet. Also, IMO, I've never heard anyone play as well as this. This is by far my favorite so far. It's all about the soul.

I had the pleasure of seeing John Park render his wondrous solo on Street of Dreams with the Kenton band, and it is a musical moment I will never forget. Hearing this rendition of Valentine only fortifies my judgment. What a tragedy that we lost this magnificent talent at such an early age and that his talent was never fully appreciated.

John Park was one of the military musicians (he in the US Army at this time) who shared the stage at weekly jam sessions at a club at the Kadena Air Force Base on the island of Okinawa in 1960. Some really good musicians were always in attendance, but John's playing was way beyond what the rest of us had to offer. So sad that he died before he garnered the wide acclaim he so deserved.

No, it's not on CD, but I've posted all the songs on the album, so you can just download all the songs at 480 p (near CD quality) and burn to CD. I also see that Park's son posted a msg on my posting of John playing Autumn Leaves watch?v=U1Pj9-3DDTc. He said he has some of the LP's and offered to sell copies to people.

I had the pleasure to visit a class he taught at U of H in '75. One of the finest players to have ever lived. Still remember those endless Monday nights at the Houston Jazz Society sessions. He was a great guy. Thanks for posting this.

LOL! Definitely, they may be near death if Park's amazing playing doesn't wake them up!

"If Winter Comes" is so appropriate. It's pretty cold over here in New England. If John Park's playing doesn't warm a heart, the pulse should be checked next.
