Wasn't the entire point of Mulan I that girls in ancient China couldn't do much? That went for everyone down the social ladder. Perhaps the princesses had a few more restrictions, but eating whole cakes, dancing in one's underwear, marrying "for love" weren't options for any girl at the time.
