MONA LISAS & MAD HATTERS

Elton John

Honky Chateau (1972)

And now I know

Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say

I thought I knew

But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true

You stand at the edge while people run you through

And I thank the Lord there's people out there like you

I thank the Lord there's people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers

Turn around and say good morning to the night

For unless they see the sky

But they can't and that is why

They know not if it's dark outside or light

This Broadway's got

It's got a lot of songs to sing

If I knew the tunes I might join in

I'll go my way alone

Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down

Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown

And I thank the Lord for the people I have found

I thank the Lord for the people I have found

Elton was very accomplished from the beginning, throughout the 70's. People felt a lot about Honky Chateau. Now the Vegas showroom is way too far from the sensitivity of this.. I wish he would find something else to do.

The best song on his most underrated album - I want this played at my funeral.......

Some of Elton John's greatest songs weren't top 40 hits. Friends, Where to now St. Peter, the whole Goodbye Yellowbrick Road album, Curtains, and on and on. Many songs that the masses will never hear, and will definitely miss out on.

This is my favourite song from the album. Why, I don't know... maybe the way he says "Now I know, Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say", the piano lick right after "know,", and then mandolins... he just makes it all seem so Real, and i'm there.

It is such a pleasure to see these comments with people just joining together and appreciating this incredible music that stunned and thrilled us in the 70s. Elton is truly a musician for the ages. Bernie Taupin is the other half of this beauty. I don't mean to be condescending, but thank you for adding your own voices of appreciation and praise. Makes my heart glad. I wish my man was still here to listen once again.
