A bunch of hardcore drug users trying to make music. This group stunk live and the people that promoted them lost out big. If they were sober they would have been good.

A happy birthday to :Alexander Lee "Skip" Spence (1946 – 1999) was a Canadian-born American musician and singer-songwriter. He was co-founder of Moby Grape, and played guitar with them until 1969. He released one solo album, 1969's Oar, and then largely withdrew from the music industry. He had started his career as a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and was the drummer on Jefferson Airplane's debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. He has been described on the Allmusic website as "one of psychedelia's brightest lights"; however, his career was plagued by drug addictions coupled with mental health problems, and he has been described by a biographer as a man who "neither died young nor had a chance to find his way out."Died at his on birthday...Moby Grape - It's A Beautiful Day Today (1968)

I remember seeing this "performance." Jerry Lewis had a syndicated show, maybe only a half hour long. I was amazed to see the Grape, even if they were lip synching. Probably not too long afterward, he cut out & joined the USMC. Shame my Download Helper doesn't seem to work with this.

One of my favourite quotes from a rock musician is attributed to Bob Mosley on meeting future band mate Peter Lewis for the first time. "I can sing anything up to high C and play like a mother#$@%!&. What can you do?" This song is proof that he was actually being modest, he didn't mention anything about his songwriting ability.

Mosely was already reacting to the stupid posturing of his cohorts by wearing a cardigan and button-down shirt with trim hair. Props to him!

The singer of this was Bob Mosely, the bassist & writer, not Skip. Mosely was the most insightful of this great 5. But as an observation, this was the best, most gifted rock group of all.

This has a sober, dignified energy. A shame that so much of the talk under a Grape song/clip that doesn't even feature him, should be about Skip Spence. He was a brilliant, protean talent, but what made the Grape so strong was the amazing raw sum of its parts. Five (five!) guys who could play, sing like rogue angels and write songs. When Skip left, they still did some lovely stuff: Captain Nemo, Going Nowhere, Truly Fine Citizen. This one arguably out 'energises' anything on Oar.

Your grandpa can be seen performing 8.05 which is from The Mike Douglas Show 1967. It is the only other film of Moby Grape posted on Youtube. All the best.

Unfortunately for you and all of us your grandpa had already left the band by this time.
