English translation provided below.

This song, performed by Mary Black, is an Irish tribute to the "Great Pretender", Bonnie Prince Charlie, the descendant of Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots who had sought to sit on the throne of Britian. To put an end to religious persecution in Scotland, occupied Ireland, Wales, and England his loyal followers of the Jacobite movement fought for him to take possession of the crown. The Jacobite rebellion (1745) was put down and hundreds of thousands died in battle under unsurmountable odds. Under secrecy, the prince fled to the continent and died in exile. "Mo Ghile Mear" was written by Seán Clárach Mac Dhomhnaill (c. 1691-1757). This Spadecaller video dramatizes the Gaelic lyrics with the paintings of D'Arcy Bacon, Caravaggio, Mary Cassatt, Gustave Courbet, Julien Dupre, Winslow Homer, and J.M.W. Turner.

LYRICS:

(Chorus)

He is my hero, my dashing darling

He is my caesar, dashing darling.

I've had no rest from forebodings

Since he went far away my darling.

Every day I am constantly sad

Weeping bitterly and shedding tears

Because our lively lad has left us

And no news from him is heard alas.

The cuckoo sings not pleasantly at noon

And the sound of hounds is not heard in nut-filled woods,

Nor summer morning in misty glen

Since he went away from me, my lively boy.

Noble, proud young horseman

Warrior unsaddened, of most pleasant countenace

A swift-moving hand, quick in a fight,

Slaying the enemy and smiting the strong.

Let a strain be played on musical harps

And let many quarts be filled

With high spirit without fault or mist

For life and health to toast my lion.

Dashing darling for a while under sorrow

And all ireland under black cloaks

Rest or pleasure I did not get

Since he went far away my dashing darling.

For a while I was a gentle maiden

And now a spent worn-out widow

My spouse ploughing the waves strongly

Over the hills and far away.

Had the Jacobite "RISING" ( I stress this because rebellion implies that the rebelling force is against the rightful leaders) continued they're March, they would have reached London and won... Often wonder how history would be had this been the case.

Charlie was the "Young Pretender." Frankly he was not worth the blood my clans and others spilled for him,

Beautiful. Whatever the reality of Charlie it matters not; " He who gives hope gives all". I am eternally grateful to have the Scots as my fellow commonwealthers still, but take my hat off, and never will forget, those who fought for Scotlands Royal independance in days long past. Rest easy ye noble warriors of Scotia. Kia Kaha, Kia Toa, Kia mana.

Here we have an Irish song sung in Irish Gaelic and all we get is the English translation and not the actual Irish! Sad.

Charlie would have brought back the Roman Catholic Church whereas the majority of Scots would have chosen the "new" Presbyterian system. The blood of the Covenanters would flow again under Charlie. Lots of romantic songs about "Wha wadna fecht for Charlie"....etc. but he was practically a fictional character. He was (in song) what many Scots wanted for a leader but the reality wasn't even close.

The Young Pretender's aim was "to put an end to religious persecution"? Really?!? Only someone who knows *nothing* about the history of these islands could believe that. Beautiful voice though.

Europeans seem to wonder about Americans... Alexander Grant one of my great grandfathers fought with the Glengaries at Culloden Moor and was sold into slavery in the Bahamas by the British. ... And then there was Bonnie Prince Charlie my 5th cousin -- eight generations removed....The Scots may have lost rising of 45... but the Scottish Americans... won the next round. The American Revolution would never have had a chance with out the Scots and the Scots Irish.... Take a look at the names from the battle of Kings
