On May 20th, 2013 Brooklyn based, 15 piece Space Funk big band The MK Groove Orchestra performed one of the final concerts at the iconic Williamsburg loft space Studio BPM NYC.....
This video is a performance of their take on Peter Moore's library funk classic "Shady Blues." Originally released under a pseudonym on the 1971 library LP "Lee Mason and His Orchestra" by Chappell Music, "Shady Blues" went on to become somewhat of a crate diggers holy grail and an oft sampled hip hop staple (perhaps most successfully on Lootpack's "Answers.") "Shady Blues" was released on a number of bootlegs and compilations over the years while the original LP fetched hundreds of dollars. In the early 00's a copy of the Jazzman 45 rpm release ended up in a young Michael Kammers' hands, he immediately transcribed the newly unearthed classic from wax and arranged it for The MK Groove Orchestra honoring the rootsy funk of the original recording, liberating it from the turntable to be experienced live by happy concertgoers at the end of almost every show since.
