Questa canzone, scritta da Michael Jackson, ed ispirata a Nelson Mandela, doveva originariamente essere presentata durante i due concerti Michael Jackson & Friends del Giugno 1999, a Seoul e a Monaco; Michael Jackson ha rivelato che la canzone fu inizialmente composta per "trovare sollievo negli attacchi terroristici in America e creare un senso di unione globale contro la violenza senza scrupoli e i crimini di massa."

È stata poi riscritta dallo stesso Michael in seguito agli attentati dell'11 Settembre alle Torri Gemelle, ed incisa come singolo di beneficenza insieme a numerose altre stars come Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Anastacia, Luis Miguel, Tom Petty, Carlos Santana, Usher e Luther Vandross. Il 21 Ottobre 2001 è stata presentata allo United We Stand What More Can I Give, concerto tenutosi allo stadio di Washington DC davanti a 46.000 persone e trasmesso in TV da ABC TV il 1° Novembre dello stesso anno.

Il singolo non fu mai pubblicato a causa di diversi fraintendimenti tra Jackson e la Sony.

I know nothing about the mechanics of music but when you listen to a particular family of songs by MJ such as human nature (Not written by him but certainly a set piece), Heal the world, You are my life and beautiful girl and this one as well as the duet with Barry Gibb (In your name I think). There seems to be this very rich, lilting and at the same time anthem approach to the notes. He seemed to be moving away from the fast dance pieces to these softer ballad anthems as what he wanted to be remembered for. Musically, I guess they are pretty naive and uncomplicated (But then so were the Beatles) but they do elicit a powerful response. I would love to hear an analysis of this music because when you hear this sort of purity coming from that brain, I guess its impressive.

Notice Michael's "normal" low, deep speaking voice. That high, soft voice we all heard through the years was his "public voice". I don't know why he used it since his real voice is great and sexy.
