Looks like he's holding a little knife or sword in his left hand.

by far the best bassist in Metallica, rhythmwise. He's sound and steady rhythm kept Lars on track

Cliff was a legend, there's no denying that. But Jason's basslines are bulletproof with how strongly they're locked into rhythym.

Wish I was more versatile with a pick for Bass. I play so much better with my fingers but I love the sound of a strong pick attack.

Jason has had such an influence on my Bass playing it's not even funny! Him and Duff Mckagan! Cliff is in my top 5 all time fave bass players tho!

if you want a lot of variation look up jazz and ska most of them have walking basslines with much variation including bridges and playing along with solos and following the rest of the band. in metal it's mostly to set the rhythym, just because something is simple doesn't make it bad. i'm a bass player myself.

Alex "leader" seems to be in a 2 or 3 guitar group! Many people these days forget the reason and purpose of bass, because there is "rhythm" guitar..! A lot of "old school" rock & metal bands, and even a majority of the ones today (especially in post rock) are 4 man or 3 man bands with 1 guitarist, 1 drummer, bassist and vocalist!

I asked a similar questoin and since I got no reply, I'm assuming the user either posted a cover they did them selves, or it's a rare clip from jason! The intro riff is semi correct (missing some notes), and the main riff needs to be played differently... At least that's how I play it! Either way it gives an idea of how the riffs should be! I have a Metallica Music Sheet book and it has a number of variations! If you're starting bass, check old metallica trust me! :)

am i missing something or does this seem to be the same riff repeated multiple times with a little deviation here n there? im looking to get into playing the bass, but if its just the same notes over and over again, is it really that enjoyable? somebody please prove me wrong

I don't care what anyone says, this is a SICK bass riff! Yes I liked cliff more, but that doesn't make Jason bad! This shit is getting too old for my taste! Anyway thanks for posting this, is this your own cover or you muted other tracks?

Just because the bassline on its own doesn't sound like a great song doesn't mean Jason is a bad bassist. Actually Jason's style supports Metallica's style perfectly. The purpose of every instrument is to make the song sound as good as possible. If following the guitar riff is what sounds the best for the song, you do that. You don't need to play anything that on its own sounds good. You need to support the song. You play the music, not just the bass.
