Anyone who says that this isn't impressive is honestly just trying to say "look at how big my cock is". Master of Puppets is eight and a half minutes long and he downpicks almost, if not every note. And they play the song 10-20BPM too fast almost every live performance. It requires the wrist strength of a really lonely gorilla.

Downpicking requires some training, indeed. It's hard at first, but if you've played guitar for like 2-3 years, you'll be doing these songs no problem. Also, a friend and I nailed Master of Puppets and AJFA albums (of course, full down-picking) in about two weeks or three of practicing and playing.

It's not necessarily the speed, it's the stamina required to downpick everything at that speed, song after song for an entire show without getting tired or burning out your arm, that makes what Hetfield does impressive.
