This song, while not very musically sophisticated or anything, was iconic, not only because it from a fun,snappy but intelligent dance music band, (a rare combination in an age of vacuous preppy night club music with techno/new wave neo-romantic lyrics) but also because it combined humour with a sadder, 'sense-of-loss' theme. It spoke up in an ironic tone for all those who found it hard to adjust to the 80s and its classism (it's just that your lazy), work slavery (I wear a construction, lumberjack in shirt), self-help obsession (You can change your mind, it'll change your life) renewed militarism (bombs are falling...then again there's always a war) and of course outright repudiation of the 60s culture of (the folk of the country.....Don't cut your hair ....). It laments that even the post-60s generation (Tony) was forced to submit to the Reagan industrial-defense complex (Now he's making a living selling parachutes door to door). I think this song has probably more effect for us now, 40 years past, when we look back at this decade and realize the 80s youth generation involved a very polarized struggle between the preppy/yuppy Reaganesque culture against a more isolated, progressive but tough minded (I could sing of the trees......Other's cry, why should I?) counterculture.

I bought this album back in '84 simply because I loved Rhythm of Youth. Initially, it didn't grab me the way Rhythm did. But I was 14, what did I know? Over the years, after hearing it many, many more times, I've really grown to love it, not only as a music enthusiast but as a musician. This album has a real depth to it. And this band really is so much unlike any other synth-pop group of their era or anything beyond. You can't say that they sound like anyone else, which alone says volumes. Beside that, I saw a recent interview w/ Ivan sporting a Rush t-shirt, and Rush is my favourite band! Cheers...

Wow. I had this on cassette. You listen to the lyrics, which were a reflection of the 60's vs the 80's from the perspective of 2013, and you remember about all that happened in the 90's and 2000's, and it just is PROFOUND. Clairvoyant...
