I think that comparison does not match, it's not fair because although melissa admires Janis Joplin, melissa is melissa has its own style are different, no esmejor or worse are just different not think Melissa Etheridge wants nor seeks to be the new Janis Joplin's comparisons the others do, but she only pays tribute to her idol.

Anyone saying you have to live the life of pain and drugs to sing it like Joplin may have a point but wouldn't you think performing this song in the midst of cancer and chemo qualify as Melissa did? Not taking anything from Joplin but her tortured soul had a great deal to do with drugs of HER choice and not out of a need to cure herself though I know at that point in time it WAS a cure for her pain so to speak. And let's not forget the original performer, Erma Franklin, who's soulful voice made this song so desirable to cover.
