Players on the level of Bonamassa, Schofield et al really do not look at guitar playing as a competition, which was my point, so perhaps 1610austin’s comment was improperly phrased. You are correct in saying that on this level of guitar it becomes a matter of personal taste. Some people like the outside playing of Ford or Schofield, while some prefer th rawer, more primal electric blues style of Bonamassa. It’s all good to me. And yes, Hiland is a great chicken picker but also plays power blues

Yours is a nicely stated, thoughtful and knowledgeable reply, gonzogourmet. I 'know' good music when I hear it, although my exposure to and grasp of the finer points of theory, modes, the circle of fifths -- all the true nuts n' bolts of guitar -- is limited. Bonamassa is a 'local boy' from where I sit in upstate New York, but that's not my reason for jumping to his defense. Be it known that I was immediately taken with Schofield's playing. I've always seen Johnny Hiland as more country-blues.

Two schools of guitar here. Both are great, though I do see 161austin’s point. To his taste, Schofield has a better style. To me, JB is of the power blues school, turbocharged pentatonics with some Eric Johnson tastefully thrown in. A similar player is Johnny Hiland. Then there is Matt Schofield’s style, which is derivative of such players as Robben Ford and Chris Cain, where they meld runs that are outside the box: melodic minor, diminished scales and so on. More harmonically complex ideas.

Goodness gracious, man. I checked your channel after reading your comment, and your viewing history would suggest that you aren't the typical 'apples-to-oranges' turd whose 'A vs, B' brand of mind-puke can be found in nearly every video comment section. This guy's different than Bonamassa, and delightfully great, but better? Go eat an apple, or an orange. Sorry, but don't make a simplistic statement at this level without expecting to get some backlash from someone who also has discerning taste.

Seen these three live, theres something about the Charm of jonny playing bass and lead keys that just... Works... Go see him live and watch closely (if you can take your eyes off schofield)... watching him do the bass line and then thrash the organ is jsut something else!

i dont understand why not just get a bass player, and let the keyboard player focus on his shit. still sounds great though

it's weird to see a live performance and then hear no applause after the solo. hahaha

GREAT! Very fresh to see in this kinda context that the keyboardist is playing the bass line.

I reckon these guys are the best blues trio playing right now - Matt's playing is inspiring and KH drums fantastic, but I have only recently figured out that the awesome bassline is courtesy only of Jonny Henderson's left hand - that's almost freaky!
