@NowhereWarm You do realize he's being facetious, right? by saying if those not born into the culture of MOR America would just dress, act , believe and jump on the credit hungry culture like middle-class Americans then we'd stop complaining that they're different and un-American. The song is a satire on America. Great song, by the way.

the ironic thing is that most everything he is mentioning as being un-american are actually american. a personal jesus? private insurance? complaining (the american way, our country was founded because of complaints with the british government, we have the right to complain if we want), capitalism (buy a new buy a new). socialism is the thing that is un-american.

i'd say this song is directed toward the conservative "man" who is against gay marriage, anything socialist, equality among women and men and a whole other slew of things. it's a satirical/sarcastic/whitty jab at the rhetoric of being "american"
