I became aware of Martin Carthy after watching this performance on TV. I was completely transfixed. I devoured his back catalogue, and now I stalk him at folk gigs around the North of England :-)

Eliza Carthy is just plain awesome. Martin is like a pied piper; his intensity sucks you in and you are poleaxed until he stops singing. His recordings do not have the same effect as his live performances - for instance, I'd heard 'Famous Flower of Serving Men' on his records, but I literally did not breathe for the entire song when I saw him live. Thanks for posting this vid!

Stop press. Try and hear Jody Stecher's superb version of "Oh The Wind And The Rain". Another version of this "The Two Sisters" ballad.

Wonderful version of Child ballad "The Two Sisters" available on Topic with Dave Swarbrick. Great story which still gives me delicious shivers. Many great versions of ballad.

@putkettleonfilms both songs and many more are based on an ancient british ballad

i love martins more recent vocals. now his voice has aged he sounds even more "folk". one of my favourite songs of martins, up there with the two magicians, the trees they do grow high and the bed making

Isn't this song the basis of Loreena McKinnett's song "The Bonnie Swans"? Wonderful performances, thanks for sharing this.

And he made a fiddle out of her breastbone Hey the gay and the grinding Sound would pierce the heart of a stone By the bonny bonny bows of London But the only tune that the fiddle would play Was Oh the bows of London The only tune the fiddle would play Was the bonny bonny bows of London So the fool's gone away to the king's high hall Hey the gay and the grinding There was music dancing and all By the bonny bonny bows of London

And he took some strands of her long yellow hair Hey the gay and the grinding Took some strands of her long yellow hair By the bonny bonny bows of London And he made some strings from this yellow hair Hey the gay and the grinding Made some strings from this yellow hair By the bonny bonny bows of London And he made fiddle pegs from her long fingerbone Hey the gay and the grinding Made fiddle pegs from her long fingerbone By the bonny bonny bows of London

Oh she floated up and she floated down Hey the gay and the grinding Floats till she come to the miller's dam By the bonny bonny bows of London And out and come the miller's son Hey the gay and the grinding Father dear here swims a swan By the bonny bonny bows of London Oh they laid her out on the bank to die Hey the gay and the grinding Fool with a fiddle come a-riding by By the bonny bonny bows of London
