Mark Lanegan's albums with Soulsavers demonstrated that his resonant vocals and dark songwriting can put a lot of substance on an electronic framework, and he performs the same feat on Phantom Radio, the new album from the Mark Lanegan Band. While the music is, for the most part, noticeably simpler and more pop-oriented, Lanegan gives the songs a rough-hewn edge, fusing classic blues and rural folk with influences rooted in post-punk and new wave. Today's Song of the Day is the first single, "Floor Of The Ocean", an atmospheric track propelled by an insistent, metronomic beat, shimmering electronics, and swathes of churning guitar.
