As far as his personal behavior and undisciplined life. You know if he was as good as you imagine, then he deserves more damnation for wasting his talent.What I know of the man, is so unappealing that I don't have a need to get into the minutiae. I find his self-destructive, self-indulgent, addictive, conspicuous consumption lifestyle, and waste of his God given talent, actually quite repulsive. There should be a special place in hell for a man who squandered all that he had, compared to the sacrifices and dedication of so many of the real tenors who have lived.

Response to a comment by Labienus.Mr. Lanza never succumbing to the lack of discipline, he has worked hard and secured a good life his whole family. They make stupid statements, in Pagliacci the tenor has only about 20 minutes to sing, brings every mediocre singer. The big M.Lanza would also managed. I know Lanza actually made some important tenors want to be a tenor-and it is attractive to hear himn do arias-but he was not an opera singer, but a movie tenor with a voice that recorded well using a mic-I never understand why people hold him in such high esteem-I'm assuming they are people who are really not opera lovers-he sang arias not operas
