A whole slew of famous bilingual musicians (and an actor) have
recorded tracks for a new Serge Gainsbourg tribute album. Lulu, the son of the celebrated French singer/songwriter, put together the tribute, From Gainsbourg to Lulu, which comes out on November 29 from Universal France.
Five tracks are currently available to stream online; all of them from various American, Irish, and British musicians trying their hand at singing French pop songs. The legendary artists include Iggy Pop doing "Initial B.B.", Rufus Wainwright on "Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'en Vais", The Pogues' Shane MacGowan on "Sous Le Soleil Exactement", Marianne Faithfull on "Manon", and Johnny Depp & Vanessa Paradis on "Ballade De Melodie Nelson". Tribute albums are rarely particularly exciting, but with new tracks from Iggy Pop and Shane MacGowan, this one is clearly an exception.
