I danced to this song in the discos of the day and ALWAYS wondered who played the mandolin. I actually bought a mandolin, but I couldn't find a tutor. However, I've taken it up again over 40 years later! Thanks for posting this video. Ray is the man!

I think we're all agreed that Ray should have been paid much more for his contribution here. It wasn't just Rod Stewart who behaved in this way though, All the classic Bowie songs on Hunky Dory were brought to life by Mick Ronson and Rick Wakeman who were paid as session musicians. Ronson worked magic for Bowie for years and never saw a penny from any royalties.

Makes you fucking sick when you think about especially when no other cunt could of played the classic riff on a Mandolin. It's always been a favourite part of the song for me and to think played live it was fucking mimed is a bloody dksgrace. I don't know about paying Ray more than 15 quid for his brilliant contribution to which he was worth way more. But I also think they should pay money back to the fans who never got real quality for the money from fucking tape decks just playing. John Peel was indeed a fucking wanker.

As a songwriter, I consider this to be a really interesting and unusual case. Ray Jackson's contribution to the song Maggie May was HUGE! Without the mandolin part, the song has no hook and hardly any melody. Jackson didn't contribute a mere improvised solo for Maggie May; he supplied the only melodic motif the song has! I really wish he had pursued his rights further, because he absolutely deserved writing credit and a share of the song's profits. I'd go so far as to say that Ray Jackson's contribution to Maggie May was nothing less than the most iconic and recognizable mandolin melody in Rock music. For what he was paid, he might as well have done nothing in that studio session but strum mindlessly in the background. Rod Stewart behaved like a dishonorable douchebag.

It does sound like Rod Stewart acted like a bit of a shit. But to be fair, the musician's union rates were pretty good for the time and they was designed to compensate session players in full for their contributions. If Stewart would have been told at the time that he'd have to give a percentage or cut of any profits the record might make to the mandolin player he might have opted to do a guitar solo instead. If session musicians like Carol Kaye and Hal Blaine got a cut of the profits from records they played on they'd be multi-millionaires by now - as would session singers like Tessa Niles.

after hearing Maggie May my fav bit was the mandolin solo however, it took me me forever to try find a video that played only the solo because i had no idea what the instrument was. I always just thought it was some sort of guitar picking.Sucks that Ray Jackson got no real quid for it ! Glad you posted this video !

Ive been a Rod Stewart fan forever, but Im pissed that Rod Stewart never gave this man his due, both in print, &monetarily..This song made Mr. Stewart,& by his own admission, hed probably still be digging graves if an American dj hadn't flipped the A side. Its not like Mr. Stewart cant afford it. He should be given a writing credit,& a portion of the gazillions that Rod "Im so tight I squeak" Stewart has made with the song over the years. PS Rod..yer latest CD sucks..time to hang er up old chum.

Heard the song on the way to work this morning and did a google search to find this. Thanks for posting, and thanks to Ray Jackson for an incredible piece of improv music.

its shitty that this geeza didnt get a fair slice of pie but this little riff is just that. anyone who plays mandolin can play it and it will have been played before. think of all the folk standards that where written by Anon; the songs remain yet nobody knows who originally penned them. there are just12 notes in western music and you can bet that all the notes, riffs, melodies and harmonies have been used, modified, forgotten and resurrected a million times before the advent of pop culture.

Ray was still doing work for Stewart 3 or 4 years after.

Ray said that when he put it together the guys in the control room were applauding. The music industry is full of guys getting paid buttons for major hits. Vic Flick who played the guitar on the James Bond theme was paid a one off £6. The industry is noted for sharks.

Stewart was creeping to John Peel. In those days DJs could make or brake a record.
