I think a lot of people missed the point if this song. Yes, it is about shoes but these shoes made his life... he treasured them. In our society it is hard to find a way to stand out or fit in for that fact. This was his way of being accepted. In the end it is sad because he realizes that all the faith he put in these shoes was false. He realizes that it is just a pair of shoes. I find that heartbreaking. Something you put everything in... and you realize it is not as big as you make it.
