While the song may be about John McDonnnell on a literal level, it can also be heard and appreciated as an extended metaphor for any and alll "good soldiers" whose efforts and labor are unknown, unsung, and unappreciated. It is about each one of us who pick up our load each day, scale our own personal heights, and carry on, doing (as my father was wont to say) "the best you can with what you got." So, here is to Stan, and here's to McDonnell who carried on and did their best with what they had.

Does this refer to the same person as Major "Red George" MacDonnell who lead the attack across the frozen St. Lawrence from Prescott, Ontario to Ogdensburg, New York during the War of 1812?

I'm a Texan and I'm spreading the word about him as fast as I can. I have many friends here now who know of him. Still working on it.

Greatest songwriter ever. A national treasure. He died a hero, way before his time. And as Stan said about himself: "Not one in ten thousand knows my name."

I wish I could find songs as well written and sung as this and Northwest Passage, in the States.

I'm fairly sure it's Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonnell, aide-de-camp to General Sir Isaac Brock in the War of 1812 (or so wikipedia tells us).
