Music: Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)

Lyrics: Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)

The song originates from "Peer Gynt", suite no. 2. (op. 23 no. 19)

Recorded in 1982 with the orchestra of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner.

Her skal jeg vente til du kommer igjen;

Ja, das Jahr verwehn;

Beautiful song ,peerless singing.The sadness of Solveig's story, and the loss of a wonderful singer/person brings a tear.

I could never decide between her and Barbara Hendricks as the best performer for this beautiful song. (Barbara Hendricks: Solveig's Song (Peer Gynt) by Edvard Grieg)

Classical music too knows it's 'hits' and 'golden oldies'. Think Swanlake. One such gem, although lesser known, is "Solveig's Song" from Edward Krieg's 'Peer Gynt'. A song which is beautiful for the range of notes and emotions it takes you through. It's a song about longing, despair, loss but mainly hope. If done right the singer manages to convey these emotions to the listener, supported of course by the orchestra she happens to be part of. There are a great many versions of this piece, but by it's nature it can lure the singer into making it a technical excersize (*). This version however, by the great Lucia Popp and backed by nothing less then Neville Marriner and the Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields, is IMHO the best on record. The way her high notes slice through my feels and the lower notes make the ground under me disappear is truly better then sex. So Much Better. Though the quality of this particular recording isn't sooper, it does have transliteration, which helps you understand what she's actually so upset about. A bit. Enjoy..*) The differences between a technical approach and more natural approach are obvious when you compare these two different recordings of the same piece by the same soprano, Marita Solberg. In clip 1 she doesn't seem to be really "in it", with the result it sounds more like she's showing off the technique, in clip 2 she's obviously in a better place and does a great job of making me cry...1. Marita Solberg - SOLVEIG'S SONG [ Edvard Grieg ] Peer Gynt. 2. Marita Solberg "Solveigs Sang (Solveig`s Song)" Grieg
