Skiffle King Lonnie Donegan and his group play the Woody Guthrie song Grand Coulee Dam in 1957. Who said that folk-rock began in the late-1960s? (With Jimmy Currie, lead guitar; Mickey Ashman, bass; Nick Nicholls, drums.)

Inspired Jimmy Page and the Beatles.

I've always loved this song. I love how it took a Brit to do the best version of this very American song (Woody Guthie) that I've ever heard, including Woody's own version.

He's got their feet tapping! Who can do that today? Yes, he's young and he's raw - but he's musical to his fingertips! Is there anyone who could compete with him today? I doubt it.

In case you didn't notice that was Doris Day in the last clip...I think.... I have so much admiration for this guy. He brought skiffle, but more important the realisation that any gang of boys or girls could make music. A guitar a, washboard, a few thimbles, and above all the tea chest bass. He made music come alive!!! 3 chords and lots of Lonnie. A man sadly missed, loved ,appreciated, a music legend.RIP Lonnie you were the THE man of skiffle.

Tony, this is a clip from the film of "6.5 Special" I'm sure you'd enjoy this. The presenters at the start of this clip were Pete Murray and Josephine Douglas. BTW the tune is that of "Wabash Cannonball". There is a Lonnie CD with both songs on it!

I used to love this song. At the time Lonnie was considered outrageous! though they were dressed as they were in evening dress! I wonder what the media of those days would write about today's young people?

I share the same thoughts as Egbert. Where has the time gone?
