According to some scientists the earth will be uninhabitable because our orbit won't be where it is in anywhere between 1 billion and 3 billion years. Space travel matters to the future.

not really. We do need the space travel. This planet isn't big enough for everyone. Even if you don't agree with that conclusion, space travel is worth it since when something does happen on this ball of rock, it won't be the end of the human race. With space travel comes colonies and space stations. Our planet number will be punched one day, if we aren't confined to that same ball of rock, then it won't necassarily be ours.

Well said, Michelle Rose, but I don't believe we will destroy the Earth; we will destroy man's ability to live here.

RIP Neil Armstong. You boldly went where no man had ever gone before.

Actually, the song is saying that the singer wonders if a long time ago (the time of what the Judeo-Christian religions think of as the creation), Someone watched Adam, who was perhaps the first astronaut, walk upon the earth.

Yes, I rather expected someone out there to reply in that vein. You're not alone. There have been hundreds, perhaps thousands like you who saw no point in 'progress' or 'advancement', or exploration or even pure knowledge. If it doesn't immediately show some benefit, you're against it. Columbus had his detractors too, as have countless others who sought something greater than ourselves. Don't worry. You don't have to go. You can stay right here and complain about the 'uselessness' of it all.

really? we`re spending lots of resources tryin to reach into "space" (=visited the moon) while we`re ruining our home-planet where we`ve got plenty of all we need.. I call it crazy

I think you missed the point: the song is about the unity of mankind on the day that Armstrong took those first steps upon another world. I support your desire to do more for humanity here on Earth. But you might consider that the best thing for humanity would be to have other homes if this one should be destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. The space program isn't "worthless." War is worthless. Corporations that rape this world are worthless. Hate and violence are worthless. Not space travel.

I was in school in India that was in the 70s It is a very meaningful song as LOBO is trying to tell that there are poor people like the one in Calcutta who also heard it on the radio and if we spend billions of dollars on these kind of worthless projects instead of clothing and educating the poor then one day because of the nuclear proliferation no one will be left behind and then as he says that they will watch Adam walking alone on this planet-the earth I love the music and the guitar played

@billyudreamer - The original is not b y Reg (who does a fine version) by the composer, the late great John Stewart, who released this as a single in 1969.

The version of this song so beautifully sung by the late, great Australian country singer, Reg Lindsay is by far the best.

I heard this song once durring the spring of 1973. A few months later I was on a two year mission for my church and have not heard it since. I could not remember the title or the artist. Finally today I decided I was going to find it. It has been remade by Nanci Grifith more recently. John Stewart the writer did it on his album Canons in the Rain. Thanks for posting this song. I see the plan of salvation in its words.

I remember this song well. It was on the radio not long after the Moon landing. The version I remember ended with the tape of Armstrong saying his famous quote "One small step for man.One giant leap for mankind"
