Freddie Hubbard - Little Sunflower '67A little gem!

I once had the privilege of playing with Freddie in a concert. I had heard a lot of horror stories about how he was to work with, and then, as it turned out, he was very nice to me (whew!). He was always one of my idols because he was such an individual -- as a player, and in other ways. It was a high point in my career, and one of my greatest memories.

Lee Morgans sound was defined by Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard starts there, but didn't come into his own until CTI. Just MHO.

Oh... My... God... In 1983, I was a teen and recorded half of this song off of the radio onto cassette and cherished it for years. I never knew the artist or name of the song.... I have literally needed it complete my music collection and it has been like the Lost City of Atlantis for me. I've been trying to figure out how to even figure it out... humming it into soundhound.... asking people.... I gave up for a while, but then I called the local jazz station and talked to the dj yesterday. I sang him what I knew and he said it was Horace Silver, but he didn't know the name of the tune. I then came on here and searched every Horace Silver song I could... Of course it was a dead end (I think the guy though I was singing "Song for my Father). This morning, I put on iHeart radio and put in "Song for my Father, hoping at some point it would see this song as a similarity but not having much hope. I was doing something and all of the sudden, this song came on.... I am totally beside myself. I'm getting every version I can get my hands on.

questo pezzo è magnifico e il flauto sembra riprodurre il volo di un uccello

love this tune. Music theory question: around 6:59-7:04, I am hearing some contrasts like Cunningham (bass) thought Hubbard was going to play another round on the B section, but Hubbard instead went back to the melody (as the form should). Cunningham appears to stay on the B section chords and then went back to the A section chords after a few seconds...does anyone else hear that? haha OR perhaps it was intentional..oh to be a fly on the wall in that recording session :-)

Freddy always looked at himself as a underdog when comparing himself to Lee Morgan. this tune just goes to show what it's all about when you just be yourself. That's really what jazz itself is all about.
