God!  I used to admire Neil Seddaka up until this moment.  I also hate my parents fro not buying any of Lenny Welch's records, as I was only under-aged ten when his songs were put out.  And my prents were such reputed, "Mushy" crooner fans.  As for Seddakka, though he wrote the song, and did a "bubble-gum" version of it, and later, a more R&B-esque redo, it was Lenny Welch who "owned" this song, as most africano artist more than usually, and reliably do deliver the "goods"!!!

Since his version of this song is unavailable elsewhere, I assume this is tied up in litigation for whatever reason. Of those that I've heard, Lenny Welch's rendition from 1969 is the best cover, and, to my taste, the best version. I doubt there is one that is more soulful.  As for other pop covers, the  version by The Happenings, arranged for their distinctive vocal style, works for me.  (I see from Wikipedia that Carole King did a cover, but was unaware of it.  I imagine it'd be a good musical complement to her "Tapestry" version of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.")

i like his version of this classic when i found a 45 copy in 2000.

Sedaka had a hit with this exact arrangement of his comp 6 years after Lenny.... I hope he thanked Mr. Welch !!!
