For my young friend and cousin from Québec, tipitjo :-) ;-)

1st part : Short extract of a French mini-serie of the 70's about the true live of Jean Roch Coignet, Captain of the Imperial Guard (see my playlist about it)

2d part : The whole lyrics song with english sub with extracts from the same French mini-serie TV of the 70's "Jean Roch Coignet" & also the movie of the French scenarist Abel Gance " Austerlitz" (1960)

--------------

About the Imperial Guard (the National Guard before 1804 and the birth of the Empire) :

It is necessary to know that to enter in the Imperial Guard, it was necessary to be a veteran with made 8 campaigns at least and to measure at least 1.76 meters height (5.77 foots), which was a big size in this time

& same giants to enter in the 1st Grenaders Regiment of the Imperial Guard : At least 1.90 meters (6.23 foots) !!

Add the large bearskin of bear and you imagine the imposing and impressive stature of the soldiers of the Imperial Guard ^^ :-)

-----------

About the Old Guard :

This Elit Troop in the elite of the Imperial Guard was not made by very old soldiers contrary to the legend

28 to 40 years old were the age old of the majority and the average was about 30-35 years

Because these soldiers were named "Old soldiers" and veterans not for their age old but for their number of campaigns, thus their big experience

Thus, one could be 28 years old for example and to be a soldiers of the Old Guard if one added up a great number of campaings, wars and battles

--------

To finish, it should be recognized there are that us the French to be able to motivate us to leave to the battle by singing a song about... food

^^ :-)

---------

J'aime l'oignon, j'aime l'oignon.

------------------

(refrain)

Au pas camarade, au pas camarade,

Au pas, au pas, au pas.

Au pas camarade, au pas camarade,

Au pas, au pas, au pas.

------------------

Un seul oignon frît à l'huile,

Un seul oignon nous change en lion,

Un seul oignon frît à l'huile

un seul oignon nous change en lion.

------------------

(refrain)

------------------

Mais pas d'oignons aux Autrichiens,

Non pas d'oignons à tous ces chiens,

Mais pas d'oignons aux Autrichiens,

Non pas d'oignons, non pas d'oignons.

------------------

(refrain)

------------------

Aimons l'oignon frît à l'huile,

Aimons l'oignon car il est bon,

Aimons l'oignon frît à l'huile,

Aimons l'oignon, aimons l'oignon

------------------

(refrain)

L'origine de ce chant est dite inconnue. Pourtant, si vous écoutez l'appel des cors dans l'ouverture de "La chasse du jeune Henri" composée par Méhul en 1797, la paternité vous sautera aux yeux ... et aux oreilles !

It is interesting to note that an old song of the Brittany (Now in France as a State of 4 départements, even if it should be 5, located in the west of France) have the same melody and 'refrain'."3 coups de talon, Et frappez dans vos mains! Et faites un demi-tour, Écoutez la musique! 3 coups de talon, Et frappez dans vos mains! Et faites un demi-tour, Et dancez la polka!------Au pas camarade, Au pas camarade,Au pas , au pas , au pas!Au pas camarade, Au pas camarade,Au pas, Au pas, Au pas!"Who was made first? Idk, but for sure one inspired the other.

Sweden elected the French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte as new heir to the throne and future king. After this, Swedish folklore has picked up the English mockery version of this chant, in which the English sing about how funny the frogs are to see, and this is one of the traditional songs when Swedes dance around the Midsummer's pole, when we celebratie Midsummer. Quite unbelievable when one has learned the origin of the song.

I like all french military marches, all of them are so motivating and beautiful melody, esp chant du depart, le garde conulaire de marengo, la victoire est a nous and la marseillaise.Still can someone explain me why "No onions for the Austrians", I know they were at war with austrian empire at that time but why the possessiveness for onions lol.

- Guys! We are outnumbered 10 to 1 and chances are that we're all going to die... Does anyone here know a rousing song fit for the occasion?- Oui! I know one that's just perfect!- Well, speak up, man! Speak up!- There's just one song fit for a Frenchman's glorious death!- Le Marseillaise? Le Chant du depart???- No! ... Le song of fried onions!!!- Mon dieu! You're bloody a genius!

in america only some people publicly speak about how bad Frances military is, and it's mostly brats who want to piss of others. I'm american-polish so thanks France for about 4 years of freedom, at least you tried

Could probably have been better translated to: "Marche on" or "onwards" instead of "Let's charge". "Let's charge" is "Chargons"
