Thank God for PBS. Lawrence Welk lives every Saturday night! Gerry in Asheville, NC.

The guitarist featured in Lawrence Welk orchestra's version was Neil de Vang. The strength of this version of Scarlett O'Hara is the superb orchestral backing with plenty of strings and horns. Superb effect!

Scarlett O'Hara ?? It sounds nothing like her!! There's no romantic, nostalgic or Southern flavor really. This is like the theme to a Western movie in the opening credits or a TV series like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Wild Wild West, etc. The title is very confusing

I still have this song on a vinyl record! Mr. Welk really branched out with this album! It was Number One in the hit parade here in Toronto, Canada in the early sixties. I still love to hear it! A grandma of two.

Perhaps this will throw some light on the mystery of "Scarlett O'Hara". The tune was penned by Jerry Lordan, who also wrote "Apache" and "Wonderful Land", two huge UK hits for The Shadows (in America, Jorgen Ingman's version of "Apache" won out...."Wonderful Land" was released in the USA, but ignored). "Scarlett..." was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office on April 18, 1963. Former Shadow Jet Harris had a #2 UK hit with it (spring '63) and Bobby Gregg competed with the Welk version.

That's a good question, I don't know the story behind the title.

Lawrence Welk had quite a few singles on the charts in the early '60's including this one. No idea which one was first.

Is this the original or was it Jet Harris. I think Jet sounded more like what I remember being played on the radio back in 1963 but can't be sure. Welk's band had a few instrumental singles out in those days.

I grew up watching his show every week with the reruns on PBS during the '90's and I am a fan too!
