Our dad was a huge Al Jolson fan. He used to sing Sonny Boy to us when we were kids. I cherish those memories so much. Because of our fathers's love for the talent of Al Jolson, my brother sister and I are all fans. My children have also been raised listening to AL Jolson and love to listen to him to. Larry Parks was wonderful in this film.

My Dad who died in 1959 at the age of 42 loved Jolson and I vividly recall him sitting me on his knee and singing this to me a few months prior to his passing, I was 11 years old at the time but fully aware of the illness that was about to take him from us, there is never a year that I don't visit this on August 20 since it became available and every time I watch this the time evaporates and I'm in tears....and always will be....

This was the first film I saw on TV that had a major impact on me. I always enjoyed singing, but became a voracious Jolson fan after watching this. I bought every Jolson album I could find and both sang and lip synched with every song. Lots of happy memories...

In actuality, this scene re-creates the event that ultimately led to the production of The Jolson Story film in 1946. Jolson's performing career was in eclipse and in 45 he was invited to appear at a Friars charity event during which many stage and screen stars performed. Jolson sang and created a sensation. The film's producer witnessed the event and suggested to Harry Cohn, head of production at Columbia, that Jolson's career would make a great film. Parks was cast and it was a huge success.

My dad was a well known Jolson Impersonator in Birmingham UK in the 50s through to the 80s. I came to watch this video as its 20 years today that dad passed away; he'd sing Sonny Boy to me when I was a little boy. We played a cassette of him singing it at the funeral and it brought down the house. He died at 15.50 on July 19 1993. I still remember and listened to this with a tear in my eye today.

I have been a fan of Jolson since I was a kid and my dad sang his songs to us (my dad was a kid when Jolson's career was winding down). I have the dvd's of both the Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again...and this particular song during Jolson Sings Again never fails to make me cry :)
