This is the song that really made me fell in love with Kris' music and the man...

Kris already had put it on his album "From here to forever" that was recorded in 1983 or so, but then disappeared when Monument went bankrupt - before it was released... What a pity... it was such a great album...

Kris about the song: "At the time I wrote it in the eighties my family had just fallen apart. The company I was recording for had sunk. My manager, a wonderful old guy I had been with since I started, got sick and died, and my song agent died as well. And the film I was in, Heaven's Gate, was the biggest bomb of all time."

Shipwrecked in the eighties

Kris Kristofferson, 1983

Well you fight like the devil to

just keep your head above water

Chained to whatever you got

that you can't throw away

And you're shooting through space

on this river of life that you're riding

And it's swirling and sucking you

deeper on down everyday.

So you turn to your trusty old partner

to share some old feelings

And you find to your shock that

your faithful companion is gone (so long, Tonto)

And the truth slowly dawns that you're

lost and alone in deep water

And you don't even know how much longer

there is to go on

Like an old Holy Bible you've clung to

through so many seasons

With the rules of survival in words

you could still understand.

When they proved something wrong

you believed in so long you go crazy

And you're so close to foldin' the cards

that you hold in your hand

Singing, holy Toledo I can't see the light anymore

All those horizons that I used to guide me are gone

And the darkness is driving me farther away from the shore

Throw me a rhyme or a reason to try to go on.

The song is on the album "Repossessed" which now is available on the "Country Collection" double CD

Shipwrecked in the eighties

Gekettet an alles was du hast

so lange Zeit.

I first met Kris back in the hungry days through Vince Matthews. The first time I hear him sing slightly off key I knew he was a poet far beyond the understanding of most people back then. His circle was small but strong. To hear him sing in the wee hours of the morning was like being in a different world listen to a language you almost had forgotten until you hear it again. Oh the familiar sound of truth and this was the 60's.

@TriumphT140 This is really backwards lol Thanks for your nice comments. I also like Steve Mc Queen. He died much too young...

@samneno1 Having listened to more of his music I can understand why. I actually came about his music/acting completely backwards. See, I was born in '84, and Dad introduced me to Steve McQueen's movies when I was 10. So I grew up on those, as well as being a fan of McQueen. So one day I was reading a book on McQueen and in the middle they had a selection of pictures - and I saw one of Kris working out at Steve's. So I looked him up figuring he was probably another good actor from the time.

@TriumphT140 Kris has always been a favorite since th early 70's. His music is timeless. Met him once in Houston... A great guy.

Cash was always my standard when it came to this sort of music. I'm more of a rock guy. I heard this in the background while watching The Wooly Boys starring Kris and Peter Fonda. I watch Peter Fonda movies when I most miss my father because they could have been twins. This song hits me square in the soul. This man is brilliant.
