23-year-old singer-songwriter Kirsty Akers is set to return to the airwaves with the single 'In Spite Of Ourselves', the first track from her forthcoming album 'Naked'.
Kirsty has been marked as an act to watch since she first came on the scene as a 17 year old winning the prestigious TRTT songwriting competition which saw her ensconced in LA and Nashville for writing sessions with a number of hit-making songwriters.
For her new single the diminutive rootsy performer with the distinctive vocal style joins forces with ARIA award winner Kevin Mitchell otherwise known as Bob Evans (Jebediah, Basement Birds), on a risqué John Prine penned classic that is sure to raise a few eyebrows.
"I've always wanted to record this song," reveals Kirsty. "I grew up listening to it and singing it around the house ... not knowing what it was actually about at the time!! It's a song that has always stuck in my mind so when it came time to record my new album it was one of the first songs chosen."
"I had heard a fair bit of Bob's music and really loved his song 'Hand Me Downs' but it wasn't until I saw him play live that I realised just how awesome he is!" said Kirsty of her duet partner. "I really didn't want to record the song with anybody else but knowing how busy he was I really wasn't expecting him to say yes. I was totally blown away when my manager called to say he loved the song and wanted to do it!"
Fearless and brutally honest with a penchant for taking her songs to places others fear to tread, there's no disputing Kirsty Akers is the real deal.
Produced by Matt Fell (Josh Pyke, Tim Friedman, Brooke Fraser) 'In Spite Of Ourselves' is the first single from Kirsty's forthcoming CD 'Naked' due for release in late June 2011.
