A year ago Kevin Tihista broke a seven year radio silence to deliver the excellent On This Dark Street; only a year later comes Modern Standard, with more music in the pipeline. He has a talent for producing effortlessly melodic music usually tied to some tale of a smashed-beyond-recovery relationship, though despair seems to bring the best out of Tihista the songwriter; "I'm dining at chez garbage can again. Oh well" he sings resignedly in 'Try the Veal', his piano picking out each humiliating detail, but the tragic tone is perked up by bleakly humorous lyrics and layered melodies. 'You Don't Make Sense' might be yet another break-up song but it's catchy, almost glam rock with a positive backbeat.

There have always been comparisons with Elliott Smith but, increasingly, you hear the influence of Harry Nilsson. Like the latter, Tihista can subvert a sumptuous melody with a crestfallen twist as he does on the moodily melancholic 'Infinity' as well as the tongue-in-cheek 'Just Can't Get High Anymore' while 'The City' has some classic Nilssonian lines, including: "final offer: I'm selling my soul at half price". It's very downbeat but you wouldn't want it any other way. While 'On My Way' is optimistic pop music with synth swizzles, it doesn't last half as long in the memory as the unrequited longing of 'Right Here Girl' or the joyful sadness of 'Happy People, Shut Your Mouths' where he advises: "don't let anybody tell you there's no need to feel sad/ those are some of the best times that I have ever had".

Modern Standard is further proof of Tihista's brilliance, full of classic songwriting and sly wit that successfully marries sweet melody with aching melancholy, making you both laugh at him and cry with him.
