I find it hard to sit through this song right through -- I am always well aware of how much I miss living under skies lit up by the fire of a million suns, burning light years away; of wide open lands and red dirt as far as the eye can see. But this song drives home just how a much a part of me our outback really is. And how utterly lost I am living in Sydney, just how lonely I feel in our most populated city.I would lay under the stars for hours, completely alone and yet not lonely. Here, I am surrounded by thousands of people every single day, and have never felt so empty and isolated in my life. Most people could never, ever understand it. But Kasey does - and fuck, her work sums it up in a way I could never ever dream of replicating.

Kasey is absolutely amazing and makes 99% of the so called "country singers" here in the states sound like cats with a rocking chair on their tails. Of all the beautiful, touching songs she does, this one is one of my very favorites.

The Nikko film clip I recently shared brought back memories of the Nullarbor. (For the non-Australians it's a bit of a cultural pilgrimage to spend days driving along the straight endless road across the desert). It's also much more personal. My Grandmother was a single mum who had 5 kids to different fathers and my Grandfather was a dirt poor railway labourer on the Nullarbor who took them all in under his wing. So my family is full of stories of driving across it when it was a dirt track, setting rabbit traps at night to catch diner, living in shanties in the railway labourer camps, walking ten miles at night using the railway line to guide you to work.Turns out Kasey grew up on the Nullarbor and wrote this beautiful song about it.
