Justin uses as simple a rhythmic form here to convey the ideals that the so-called new world was meant to embody. But the despair of doubt in his voice cannot be denied. The fact is that the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and all the colonial empires paid lip service to the ideals of the Enlightenment and Indigenous lights such as the Iroquois. The US Monroe Doctrine in 1848 began the US of imperialism as usual--just another brutal European type empire.

This is really exceptional...lovely images and artwork. I'll admit, this song had to grow on me but it's now one of my favorites. It holds such hope and acceptance for the way our world is changing now. I really love this video! Annie

My personal take on the song is that it's about refugees everywhere, who struggle against horrendous odds to find "the promised land," wherever that may be--wherever they've heard there's a better future for them. Not necessarily America at all.

Is "The Promised Land" in this song America?

My Darling of Darlings -- you made it to the Eternal Promised Land (Heaven) before me. I'm waiting for you to return for me very, very soon. No matter where I go in this world, my life is null and void without you, My Barbra Rose. I love you beyond Space/Time.

FREDDIE MERCURY

OMG!!!!! FREDDIE MERCURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At 1:16 and 5:54......It's FREDDIE!!! Queen had a studio in Montreux, Switzerland and that's Freddie looking out on Lake Geneva. Wow.....Freddie is the last person I thought I'd see on a Moody Blues vid. It made my day! Does anyone know where the shot at 3:13 was taken? Great song, btw!! Beautiful singing fr Justin, as always! 'Pocketful of dreams'....what a fantastic line! Thanks so much! :)

Dearest Ever Jill, You have put so much love into making this for us. Simply "Wow"! and a tremendous "Thank You"! Viewing this made me want to pay tribute to my parents who escaped the Russian occupation of Estonia, who individually came to Canada with nothing and met here after WWII ended. I for one feel blessed and am a grateful one to have been born in this" promised land". The View from the Hill is a fabulous piece of work. Justin Hayward is such a brilliant songwriter and singer. A+!
